Member Appreciation Events kick-off: Movie by the Bay

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Earlier this year, staff at the Science Museum of Long Island thought long and hard about our members, the most loyal patrons of the Science Museum.  Our institution is dedicated to nurturing children’s interest in science through hands on learning and elevating science literacy, but can only do so with the help of the community.  Our programs run seven days a week because our members and the local community show support for our mission.  Year after year, schools, families and scouts register for programs, demonstrating their awareness of the value of SMLI’s mission… and now we want to show that we value you.

This past weekend, our brand new series of Member Appreciation Events commenced with a free “Movie by the Bay.”  SMLI staff and members gathered on the great lawn to view “Night at the Museum” while enjoying picnic dinners.  Dr. John Loret, Director of SMLI (pictured below) greeted guests as they entered museum grounds.  SMLI provided free bags of Doritos, Sun Chips, and freshly popped popcorn!  (I fully enjoyed my role as popcorn popper and flavorer, offering four types of popcorn to our hungry crowd. See below; I’m in the gray sweatshirt with the giant popper.)  Along with my faithful helpers, Jen and Jerry (also pictured below carrying Mallomars and blankets), we kept the popcorn popping all night long.  Overall, the night was a fun-filled success with dozens of families having a good old-fashioned time in the great outdoors, spending quality time with their loved ones… and their beloved Museum.

Stay tuned for the next three free member events: Members’ Annual Meeting in December, a World of Wines wine-tasting event in February, and Canoe the Coast in June.
